There’s no fixed rule, it depends on your style and bed size. For a queen bed, 2 to 4 throw pillows are usually ideal. For a king bed, 4 to 6 throw pillows can make it look fuller and balanced. You can go minimal or maximal; both look great when styled with intent.

Start with your sleeping pillows propped upright at the back. Then, layer in your larger square pillows, followed by medium-sized cushions. Finish with smaller throw pillows or a lumbar pillow in front. You can mix sizes and textures but keep symmetry or balance in mind if you want a tidy look.

Throw pillows themselves can last for 5 to 10 years depending on usage and quality. Pillow covers, especially printed cotton and linen, may begin to fade after 3–5 years, particularly with frequent washing. Regular care can help them last longer.
